Basalt Columns Southern Washington quarried stone Basalt is lava that cooled on the surface of the earth, often these flows harden into polygonal columns like those shown here for sale. In the USA most of these polygonal flows exist in Southeastern Washington. There some outcroppings of this type of basalt in smaller amounts in California, Idaho and Montana. This stone makes for outstanding benches in parks, schools and other public grounds. The columns are also easily turned into water fountains or incorporated into waterfalls.
